The summer heat wave here in Boulder finally gave way to one heavenly, dripping wet day. Colorado doesn’t often get rain that goes on for hours at a time, so when we do it’s memorable.
I enjoyed the last of that coolness on a walk this morning, watching the bees flit around a wooded hollow next to the path. I don’t even know what these tiny, orchid-like flowers are, but the bees loved them.
The white yarrow (I believe that’s what it is) against the wooden fence post also caught my eye, casting its shadow while sparkling with dew. It symbolizes summer for me: simply enjoying the sun, flourishing where it found its roots.
I’ve been thinking about roots lately, about belonging, movement, and change. I’ve spent time retracing what I’ve learned throughout this past year at Naropa University. It has been a year of growth and change, and of discovering who I am beyond my preconceptions. Recently I read back through an essay I published in 2015, about the struggles of becoming one’s own Hero. I feel that I’ve made progress along that journey, and also that there’s so much more to come.
